| Chief Allison M. Bernard Memorial High School |
Chief Allison M. Bernard Memorial High School is
located in Eskasoni First Nation, Nova Scotia, Canada, along the beautiful Bras'dor Lakes. It is a rural school
that teaches about 200 students. The school is built with graphic Mi'kmaq designs and art that include student paintings
on the hallways of our school. The school consists of Mi'kmaq students from grade ten to twelve.
The average class size ranges from 15-30 students. The school was opened in September 1998 and we take great pride
in being the school otherwise known as Eskasoni High School. The school also encourages community involvement and
participation and we have an open door philosophy for everyone. Chief Allison M. Bernard Memorial High School
follows the Nova Scotia Curriculum Guide and supplements the courses outlined by Nova Scotia with Mi'kmaq Language,
Mi'kmaq Culture and Mi'kmaq Studies Courses for its students. We are a First Nation school and therefore
there is an emphasis placed on cultural and linguistic education for our students. Since the school has opened
we have received a great deal of support from the people of Eskasoni, the Band Council and UINR. The staff and
students (school) take great pride in the Mi'kmaq culture and language by holding the annual role model of the year award.
The role model criteria must include a respected elder from the community, and a person who has contributed in maintaining
the culture and language of our children. The students also take part in other events such as the annual Science Fair,
Mi'kmaq Speech Festival, Fine Arts Festival, Envirothon, Safe Grad, and other extracurricular activities.
