Nestled snugly along the shores of the beautiful Bras D'or
Lakes, our school is home to some 900 students. Our population of Mi'kmaq First Nations children begin their educational
journey with us at age 4 when they enroll in our kindergarten program. Even at this early age, their parents may choose
that they follow our Mi'kmaq immersion program, or the provincially approved English mainstream program. Regardless
of which program they pursue, by the beginning of grade 3 all children merge into the mainstream program which continues to
incorporate specialist instruction in their native Mi'kmaq language for the remainder of their time with us. Following
grade 4, the children enter our middle school where they are educated and nurtured through their turbulent and exciting adolescent
years until they graduate from our school at the end of grade 9.
Throughout their career with us, the children receive a quality education delivered by caring competent
individuals who encourage each child to reach his or her fullest potential in a safe, non-threatening, non-coercive, needs
fulfilling environment. Positive people with positive ideas are charged with the responsibility of allowing our students
to become competent and secure in making choices for themselves and in accepting responsibility for those choices. Our
school is an extension of the community and it is mandated to reflect an open, welcoming, atmosphere where the rich Mi'kmaq
linguistic and cultural heritage will be respected and nurtured.
