Patrick Johnson is the Director of Mi'kmaq Student
Services at the Cape Breton University. He has been employed by the Eskasoni School Board since he graduated from Cape
Breton University in 1990. Mr. Johnson has been dealing
with Mi'kmaq and Aboriginal Students attending Cape Breton University. His duties range from course counselling
to picking out a suitable time table to telling the students what they need to do to secure funding. Mr. Johnson
has counseled students in a wide range of areas. He has secured the services of tutors to help students with any
course that they may have difficulty with. As the Director he has been actively involved with Mi'kmaq Students as
to what they need to do to graduate as well as going to graduate school to other Universities. Mr. Johnson is in charge of the Mi'kmaq Student Centre. The Centre is a place where the
Mi'kmaq and Aboriginal Student can go to study, be with their friends or do their assignments on the computers provided.
He ensures that there is an atmosphere where students are comfortable to discuss their problems and successes in whatever
language they want. Patrick Johnson is the liaison for
the students to their professors, Administration at Cape Breton University, their funding agency as well as other Universities.
Mr. Johnson has arranged recruitment sessions with other Universities for the Mi'kmaq and Aboriginal students to find
out the options to furthering their studies. He has been actively involved with Mi'kmaq Studies, Aboriginal Programming
and has taught several courses. His main goal is to see that all Mi'kmaq and Aboriginal Students succeed at
Cape Breton University.
